EMS 120 - Basic EMT II Offered WI Lecture- 5 5 credit hrs/5 contact hrs Prerequisite: EMS 118 - Basic EMT I , EMS 130 - Basic EMT Lab I , and EMS 140 - Basic EMT Clinical I with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) Corequisite: EMS 131 - Basic EMT Lab II and EMS 141 - Basic EMT Clinical II
This course, in conjunction with EMS 118, EMS 130, EMS 131, EMS 140, EMS 141, EMS 150, and EMS 160, is designed to teach the knowledge, skills, and appropriate behavior to prepare students for the National Registry Certification examination which will enable them to obtain a Michigan Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license. The focus of this course is on the didactic material including topics such as: respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies, allergic reactions, poisoning/overdose emergencies, obstetrics, abdominal illness, bleeding and shock, musculoskeletal care, and special considerations such as geriatrics and pediatrics. Students will be under the direct supervision of a licensed EMS Instructor-Coordinator. Successful completion of this course requires the student to pass both the written and practical skills examinations consistent with state and national standards.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Define Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems.
- Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the EMR from other prehospital care providers.
- Recognize the importance of universal precautions, or BSI.
- Define the EMR scope of practice.
- List the levels of EMS licensure in Michigan and how to obtain and maintain an EMT license.
- List the benefits and responsibilities of continuing education.
- Discuss the methods of obtaining consent.
- Explain the importance of patient confidentiality.
- Identify the components of “vital signs”.
- Identify route of Epi-pen administration.
- Identify routes of narcotic antagonist administration.
- List the indications and contraindications for using an oropharyngeal airway.
- List the indications and contraindications for using a nasopharyngeal airway.
- Discuss common mechanisms of injury/nature of illness.
- Explain special considerations required for geriatric patients.
- Explain special considerations required for pediatric patients.
- List the signs of effective CPR.
- List the complications of CPR.
