EMS 118 - Basic EMT I Offered FL Lecture- 4 Lab/Studio- 0 4 credit hrs/4 contact hrs Prerequisite: Attend an EMS Orientation Corequisite: EMS 130 - Basic EMT Lab I and EMS 140 - Basic EMT Clinical I
This course, in conjunction with EMS 120, EMS 130, EMS 131, EMS 140, EMS 141, EMS 150, and EMS 160, is designed to teach the knowledge, skills, and appropriate behavior to prepare students for the National Registry Certification examination which will enable them to obtain a Michigan Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license. The focus of this course is on the didactic material including topics such as: introduction to emergency medical care, the well-being of the EMT – Basic, lifting and moving patients, initial assessment, detailed physical exam, communications, documentation, ambulance operations, triage, disaster, and hazmat. Students will be under the direct supervision of a licensed EMS Instructor-Coordinator. Successful completion of this course requires the student to pass both the written and practical skills examinations consistent with the state and national standards.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Define Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems.
- Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the EMR from other prehospital care providers.
- Recognize the importance of universal precautions, or BSI.
- Define the EMR scope of practice.
- List the levels of EMS licensure in Michigan and how to obtain and maintain an EMT license.
- List the benefits and responsibilities of continuing education.
- Discuss the methods of obtaining consent.
- Explain the importance of patient confidentiality.
- Identify the components of “vital signs”.
- Recognize the major organs contained in each specific body cavity.
- Describe the guidelines and safety precautions that need to be followed when lifting a patient or heavy equipment.
- Determine if the scene is safe to enter.
- Discuss common mechanisms of injury/nature of illness.
- Explain the importance of effective communication of patient information in the verbal report.
