EMS 130 - Basic EMT Lab I Offered FL Lecture- 0 Lab/Studio- 4 2 credit hrs/4 contact hrs Corequisite: EMS 118 - Basic EMT I and EMS 140 - Basic EMT Clinical I
EMS 130, along with EMS 118, EMS 120, and EMS 131 are foundational courses of the Basic EMT certificate program and are designed to teach the knowledge, skills, and appropriate behavior to prepare students for the National Registry Certification examination which will enable them to obtain a Michigan Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license. The focus of this course is on the practical lab hours necessary to apply the skills learned in EMS 118, covering such topics as lifting and moving patients, baseline vitals, airway, oxygenation, ventilation, focused history and physical exam: medical and trauma, gaining access, triage, disaster, and hazmat. Students will be under the direct supervision of a licensed EMS Instructor-Coordinator. Successful completion of this course requires the student to pass both the written and practical skills examinations consistent with state and national standards.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate the proper donning and doffing of protective gear appropriate for the EMT and situation.
- Perform basic airwary management techniques including insertion of adjuncts intended for the oropharynx and nasopharynx.
- Demonstrate the knowledge of triage and assigning patients to the appropriate level facility.
- Demonstrate the ability to interact with other responders appropriately including giving and taking advice on patient care.
- Interact as a member of a team.
- Demonstrate the ability to complete a patient care report including a summation of treatment provided to the receiving facility or transporting ambulance.
- Demonstrate the ability to properly prepare the patient for transport while limiting or aggravating any injuries.
