EMS 252 - Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Offered SM Lecture- 1 1 credit hrs/1 contact hrs Prerequisite: Completion of all EMS courses with a “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) Corequisite: EMS 201 - Paramedic II , EMS 211 - Paramedic Pharmacology II , EMS 221 - Paramedic Cardiology II , EMS 241 - Paramedic Clinical II , EMS 250 - Advanced Cardiac Life Support , EMS 251 - Advanced Pediatric Life Support
The Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course will follow the NAEMT’s curriculum written to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all involved in the response team’s prehospital care delivery. PHTLS is developed by NAEMT in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. The Committee provides medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program. Topics such as physiology of life and death, scene and patient assessment, airway, breathing, and circulation priority, patients with disabilities, and patient simulation. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of completion, a wallet card recognizing them as PHTLS providers for 4 years, and 16 hours of CAPCE credit.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the relationship of kinematics to trauma and its role in patient management.
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct an initial primary survey, a secondary survey, and a physical exam.
- Identify the need for spinal immobilization and rapid transport.
- Exhibit competency in airway management while maintaining in-line cervical spine immobilization.
- Describe the physiology of aging and discuss special considerations involved in patient management.
