EMS 251 - Advanced Pediatric Life Support Offered SM Lecture- 1 1 credit hrs/1 contact hrs Prerequisite: Completion of all EMS courses with a “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) Corequisite: EMS 201 - Paramedic II , EMS 211 - Paramedic Pharmacology II , EMS 221 - Paramedic Cardiology II , EMS 241 - Paramedic Clinical II , EMS 250 - Advanced Cardiac Life Support , EMS 252 - Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
Course is designed to prepare paramedic students to respond to emergencies in infants and children; seeking to improve outcomes for pediatric patients through effective recognition and intervention in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest. A focus will be placed on high performance team dynamics and high-quality communication within the team.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) per American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support (BLS) standards.
- Differentiate whether or not a patient requires immediate intervention.
- Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within appropriate timeframe.
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure. Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure.
- Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock. Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock.
- Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias.
- Define clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias.
- Implement post–cardiac arrest management.
- Apply teamwork dynamics in the effort to accomplish appropriate outcomes.
