SOC 274 - Sociology of the Family Offered WI in even years Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Prerequisite: SOC 171 - Introduction to Sociology or PSY 161 - Introduction to Psychology with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) or Instructor Permission This course will explore various topics related to family life in the United States, including youth-to-adult transitions, marriage, divorce, childrearing, and the care of elderly.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify and explain key concepts, trends, and theories related to the sociological study of families.
- Express ideas in written and oral communication effectively (accurate, logically organized, grammatically sound, and properly cited).
- Identify how the concepts in this course are present in and relevant to their personal, social, and work lives.
- Connect ideas learned in this class to each other.
- Discuss how struggles people face as a result of existing family issues and institutional practices.
- Appreciate the importance of sociology as a tool for understanding family and family life.
- Develop more effective learning habits.
