SOC 274 - Sociology of the Family

Prerequisite: SOC 171 - Introduction to Sociology  or PSY 161 - Introduction to Psychology  with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) or Instructor Permission
This course will explore various topics related to family life in the United States, including youth-to-adult transitions, marriage, divorce, childrearing, and the care of elderly. 

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify and explain key concepts, trends, and theories related to the sociological study of families.
  • Express ideas in written and oral communication effectively (accurate, logically organized, grammatically sound, and properly cited).
  • Identify how the concepts in this course are present in and relevant to their personal, social, and work lives.
  • Connect ideas learned in this class to each other.
  • Discuss how struggles people face as a result of existing family issues and institutional practices.
  • Appreciate the importance of sociology as a tool for understanding family and family life.
  • Develop more effective learning habits.
