PSY 161 - Introduction to Psychology Offered FL, WI, SM Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Exploration of human behavior covering topics such as the brain and nervous system, behavioral genetics, sensory processes, consciousness, learning, memory, intelligence, cognition, lifespan development, personality, emotion, motivation, mental health and social interaction. Focus on critical thinking skills, basic research methods, and applications.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Compare and contrast the key assumptions and empirical findings for the major schools (theoretical orientations) in modern psychology.
- Evaluate the strengths and limitations of various kinds of evidence.
- Apply scientific reasoning skills to claims about human behavior.
- Demonstrate awareness of how empirical research can often inform ethical and moral debates about human behavior and social policy.
- Convey psychological concepts, methods, and evidence clearly in written and spoken reports.
- Exhibit professional behavior in attendance, assignment completion, class conduct, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
