PSY 266 - Social Psychology Offered as needed Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Prerequisite: PSY 161 - Introduction to Psychology or SOC 171 - Introduction to Sociology with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) Exploration of how people think about, influence, and interact with each other. Explores topics such as self‐concept, impression formation, intuition and reason, attitudes, persuasion, gender, attraction, liking and loving, conformity, obedience, aggression, media, peacemaking, helping, and sustainable futures. Also examines many of the interesting and creative ways social psychologists have researched these topics.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Distinguish social psychology perspectives from other perspectives in psychology and the social sciences.
- Explain basic principles of social psychological research and evaluate arguments concerning the ethics of various research methods used in social psychology.
- Apply social psychological concepts and research to one’s self-concept and to one’s decision making.
- Describe the ways culture influences social psychological thinking and behavior.
- Write a multi-page APA style report that applies social psychological research to one or more areas of contemporary concern that relies primarily on primary research sources.
- Participate in a class poster session designed to inform others about a social psychological topic.
- Exhibit professional behavior in attendance, assignment completion, class conduct, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
