PSY 263 - Educational Psychology Offered as needed Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Prerequisite: PSY 161 - Introduction to Psychology with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) Examines the psychological principles underlying teaching and learning. Focuses on fundamental questions about memory, learning, cognition, motivation, and individual differences. Explores how individual and cultural differences affect decisions about creating and maintaining learning environments. Familiarizes students with regulations and current trends affecting the practice of education. May involve research and a field experience.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe major theories of development in the cognitive and psychosocial realms (e.g., Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Erikson, etc.).
- Describe developmental changes in memory, metacognition, and motivation.
- Explain how cultural and individual differences affect teaching and learning.
- Formulate empirical questions related to teaching and learning.
- Locate and use primary educational research sources in an APA style paper devoted to some aspect of teaching and learning.
- Propose possible solutions for classroom management problems.
- Design a lesson incorporating sound educational principles.
- Develop appropriate assessment strategies to measure learning.
- Exhibit professional behavior in attendance, assignment completion, class conduct, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
