EDU 205 - Reading Assessment & Methods (PK-3) Offered every other year Lecture- 3 Lab/Studio- 2 4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs Prerequisite: ECE 132 - Promote Erly Lit and Language Dv with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) This course offers a comprehensive, concentrated examination of developing literacy concepts in grades PK-3 including print concepts and decoding, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, morphology, spelling, syntax, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, composition, and speaking and listening. Students will consider how research can effectively inform classroom practice as well as the importance of teaching in a culturally responsive manner. A field component (30+ hours) will enable students to describe an individual’s current literacy development and determine appropriate literacy goals and corresponding assessments. Classroom discussion, reflective writing, academic reading, and participatory fieldwork are equally important methods through which students in this course will develop professional knowledge and expertise in the field. 4 credits (including one lab credit for field work/observation)
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Define key concepts in literacy development and demonstrate awareness of best practices for their instruction (e.g. print concepts and decoding, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, morphology, spelling, syntax, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, composition, and speaking and listening).
- Evaluate the key foundational theories for reading and writing processes, instruction, and assessment.
- Conduct developmentally appropriate fieldwork for one or two children using a carefully developed literacy turtoring plan.
- Demonstrate the effective use of written reflection as a learning tool with reflective field notes and in response to reading and in-class prompts.
- Create a comprehensive unit plan the exhibits practical understanding of effective literacy instruction and assessment in accordance with the Common Core standards.
- Explain how effective literacy instruction can foster awareness, respect, and valuing of differences in our society.
- Explain how effective literacy instruction integrates quality research, best practices, appropriate materials, and authentic assessments.
- Identify personal habits supportive of lifelong literacy, as taught by effective educators, and as practiced by educators, students, and families.
