ECE 132 - Promote Erly Lit and Language Dv Offered FL Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs This course will focus on early literacy development - listening, speaking, viewing, reading, writing, and visual representation – for children birth to age eight. Focus will include the definition, differing philosophies, and activities to promote the foundations of early literacy, while assisting future educators to understand the importance of creating a culturally appropriate literacy environment. Course assignments will focus on pedagogy and professional reflection based on the role that teachers play in promoting an inclusive early literacy environment.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate and differentiate how to introduce and select literature for the classroom for each age of language development, birth through eight years old.
- Analyze through anecdotal observations how to encourage emerging skills and how to design the environment to reinforce new developmental growth in reading, writing, and spelling.
- Compare and contrast conversational strategies that best support language and literacy learning and are unique to the child and their family.
- Analyze children’s literature for educational properties, such as print saliency, letter/sound teaching, teacher/student engagement opportunities, purpose of text, and cultural and inclusive considerations.
- Prepare and design a one-of-a-kind children’s book, specifically focused on alphabetic knowledge and teaching.
- Conduct an environmental writing inventory assessment in an early care and learning environment.
- Prepare a culturally responsive lesson plan that includes educational standards, interest areas, developmental level, interaction and assessment strategies, and inclusive practices.
