CHM 110 - Intro to Organic and Biochemistry Offered as needed Lecture- 3 Lab- 2 4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs Prerequisite: CHM 107 - Introduction to Chemistry with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) or equivalent of one year of high school chemistry A survey of organic and biochemistry. Topics include the biologically significant classes of organic compounds, common reactions and applications to everyday life including the major biomolecules, metabolic pathways, protein synthesis and nucleic acids.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify functional groups in organic compounds and their chemical properties.
- Name IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and give common names of simple organic and biochemical compounds.
- Predict organic and biochemical physical properties and common reactions.
- Explain the structures and functions of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids and metabolic pathways.
- Collaboratively and safely perform laboratory procedures using organic and biochemical compounds and reactions.
