CHM 107 - Introduction to Chemistry

Offered FL, WI
Lecture- 3 Lab- 2
4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs
Prerequisite: MTH 121 - Intermediate Algebra  with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) or appropriate assessment score
Introduction to the essential elements of inorganic (general) chemistry emphasizing matter and energy. Topics include problem solving skills using dimensional analysis, atomic structure, periodic trends, ionic and covalent compounds, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, gas laws, solution chemistry, basic thermochemistry, the role of equilibrium and kinetics; acid‐base chemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Emphasis on chemistry for students interested in the allied health sciences.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Recognize and apply to problem solving units of measure, significant figures, and unit conversion.
  • Collaboratively and safely perform laboratory experiments to test chemical hypotheses.
  • Apply basic chemical principles from an understanding of the elements and compounds using atomic structure and the periodic table.
  • Determine formulas, draw structures and determine names of ionic and covalent compounds based on electron configuration.
  • Determine molecular masses and perform mole calculations using balanced chemical reactions.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of nuclear chemistry and radiation.
  • Explain the properties of gasses, liquids, solutions, acids and bases.
