EMS 102 - Emergency Medical Responder Lab Offered FL, WI, as needed Lecture- 0 Lab/Studio- 4 Clinical- 0 2 credit hrs/4 contact hrs Prerequisite: No prerequisites. Corequisite: EMS101, the didactic component.
The lab portion of this course will focus on hands-on practice to develop the core skills needed for emergency care. Students will engage in practical exercises to apply concepts learned in the didactic sessions, including scene safety, patient assessment, basic airway management, emergency splinting, and hemorrhage control. Using simulation and real-life scenarios, students will work with specialty tools and equipment, honing their ability to respond effectively in critical situations. This interactive, skill-based training will prepare students for the demands of emergency care in the field.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate proper patient handling, lifting, and moving techniques
- Apply knowledge of airway anatomy and physiology to maintain an open airway, pulmonary resuscitation, oxygenation, and ventilation using specialized equipment and devices
- Evaluate a scene for potential hazards and evaluate mechanism of injury or nature of illness while continuing assessment and treatment of the patient for conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies, trauma such as bleeding and shock, soft tissue, muscle and bone injuries, and head and spinal injuries
- Accept and uphold the responsibilities of a First Responder in accordance with the standards of an EMS professional
- Distinguish special patient considerations and choose appropriate modified communications and special handling of these cases
- Apply the knowledge needed to function in the prehospital environment, particularly as it relates to hazardous materials, rescue extrication, and triage
