EMS 101 - Emergency Medical Responder Didactic

Prerequisite: No perquisites 
Corequisite: EMS102, which is the lab component.

This didactic portion of the course will provide students with the foundational knowledge required to sustain life, prevent further injury, and reduce pain at the scene of an emergency until advanced help arrives. Through lectures and interactive discussions, students will learn essential concepts such as scene safety, patient assessment techniques, basic airway management, emergency splinting, hemorrhage control, and the use of specialty tools. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the principles behind these skills, ensuring students are prepared for real-world emergency scenarios.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Define the components of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems
  • Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) from other out-of-hospital care providers
  • Identify safety precautions to be taken prior to performing the role of EMR
  • Discuss the types of medical oversight that may affect the medical care provided by an EMR
