CHM 102 - Chemistry & Society Offered FL, WI Lecture- 3 Lab- 2 4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs This survey of chemistry course will examine the vital role of chemistry in addressing the many challenges in our world and is intended for non-science majors. The application of chemistry is intricately involved in everything we do in our daily lives including sustainability for healthy ecosystems, communities, and economies. Chemistry knowledge is introduced and applied on a need-to-know basis with respect to issues in society that have significant chemistry components including energy, rational decision making, and personal health care.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the challenges of energy and global sustainability by applying foundational chemistry
skills.
- Apply chemistry to atmospheric science and science-based decision making.
- Examine the chemistry of food and water.
- Explore chemistry for topics such as plastics, various industries, health, and sustainability.
- Explore themes of society and chemistry including plastics, garbage, and health care.
- Examine the scientific method and qualitative versus quantitative relationships in science.
