ECE 201 - Special Ed and Diverse Populations

An introduction to teaching methodologies and strategies designed for working with special education and diverse populations of children from birth through eight years old. Course framework includes historical viewpoints, causes of disabilities, academic and social characteristics, assessment, and intervention procedures relevant to special education and early childhood education.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Create learning environments that promote Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Division for Early Childhood (DEC) recommended practices.
  • Distinguish the categories of disabilities identified under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Law, U.S. Department of Education.
  • Differentiate between an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Create a transition plan for a child going from Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) to Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Articulate early childhood universal supports within the indoor and outdoor classrooms.
  • Identify resources and accommodations for different disabilities as they apply to children birth to age eight.
  • Demonstrate the ability to promote and provide opportunities to engage parents, families, and communities.
