EMS 110 - EMR to EMT Matriculation Offered FL Lecture- 6 6 credit hrs/6 contact hrs Prerequisite: Current Emergency Medical Responder License Corequisite: EMS 111 - EMR to EMT Matriculation Lab , EMS 112 - EMR to EMT Matriculation Clinical
This course provides information about the pre-hospital management of medical conditions at the basic life support level. Emphasis is placed on pathophysiology, recognition of signs and symptoms of Medical and Trauma patients, review of basic life support management techniques, anatomy and physiology, and patient assessment. Prerequisite: Current State of Michigan EMR License or students who recently completed the West Shore EMR course and are in the process of obtaining their license.

- Define Emergency Medical Services (EMS) systems.
- Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the EMT from other prehospital care providers.
- Describe the possible sources of disease.
- Identify the laws affecting EMS.
- Define the Standard of Care.
- Explain medical liability.
- Explain patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
- Explain the body’s physiological responses to shock.
- Identify the types of shock.
- Perform assessment techniques of the shock victim.
- Perform general management of patients in shock.
- Perform the techniques for rapid packaging and transport.
- Identify significant anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
- Perform the techniques of a respiratory assessment.
- Demonstrate airway management techniques.
- Discuss pediatric trauma conditions and their management.
- Identify neurological anatomy and physiology and terminology.
- Identify neurological assessment skills, signs, and symptoms of neurological conditions.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of diabetes.
- Discuss treatment options for diabetes.
- Discuss disorders of the Endocrine System.
- Perform an assessment of the geriatric patient.
- Identify trauma conditions in the geriatric patient.
- Identify medical conditions of the geriatric patient.
- Identify stress management techniques.
- Explain the role of stress on the body.
- Discuss psychological emergencies.
