EMS 150 - Emergency Driving - Ambulance

Practical knowledge and experience to safely operate an ambulance is provided to the student in this course.  Such topics as safety strategies, operational laws, defensive driving techniques, and specialized driving maneuvers are presented.  Student must hold a current and valid unrestricted State of Michigan Driver’s License and allow for copy of same as well as verification that the driver’s license and vehicle record are in good standing.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Define specific terms associated with ambulance operations.
  • Describe the medical and non-medical equipment needed to respond to a call.
  • List the phrases of an ambulance call and state what information is essential in order to respond to a call.
  • Discuss various situations that may affect response to a call.
  • Summarize the importance of preparing the unit for the next response.
  • Identify what is essential for completion of a call.
  • List the items on an ambulance that should be inspected daily for proper function.
  • List contributing factors to unsafe driving conditions.
  • Discuss the rationale for use of excessive speed.
  • Dscribe the techniques used to stop a vehicle from hydroplaning.
  • List rules for parking the ambulance at an emergency scene.
  • Describe the general provisions of state laws relating to the operation of the ambulance and privileges in several identified categories.
  • Describe the considerations that should be given to request for escorts, following an escort vehicle, and intersections.
  • Discuss the “Due Regard for Safety of All Others” while operating an emergency vehicle.
