ALH 160 - Phlebotomy Offered WI Lecture- 1 Lab- 3 2 credit hrs/4 contact hrs Prerequisite: Current BLS certification Designed to prepare the entry-level phlebotomist or those interested in a medical career with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform phlebotomy techniques correctly and safely. Students will learn the order of blood draws, various techniques and locations for obtaining a blood specimen, and processing and transporting specimens. Students will gain confidence through continued practice with medical equipment, and on-line and classroom instruction. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician Certification. An American Heart Association (AHA) Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card is required.
Student Learning Outcomes: Identify and select the appropriate equipment and location site for venipuncture and capillary puncture.
Explain and execute safety measures pertaining to venipuncture and capillary puncture.
Successfully perform at least 25 venipunctures and 10 capillary punctures, using correct techniques, on live subjects.
Demonstrate knowlede of government and facility regulations regarding specimen collection, processing, and transport.
Communicate and interact professionally with staff, patients, and patients’ family members.
