WLD 110 - Blueprint Reading for Welders

Basic fundamentals of drawing interpretation as applied to the welding trade, with emphasis on coverage of welding symbols. Introduction to template development and layout.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Develop an understanding of the different types of lines and basic views used to make up a blueprint and how this information relates to the shape and dimension of an object.
  • Demonstrate the use of notes and specifications used on blueprints and how they apply to an object.
  • Interpret basic welding symbols and apply this information to blueprints.
  • Describe the types and purpose of dimensions and how they relate to an object.
  • Identify various types and styles of structural shapes, and how to call out their sizes.
  • Provide technical description of the different types of views needed to indicate size and shape of an object.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how the different views can be sectioned to gain visual aces to inner surface.
  • Provide general orientation of how detail, assembly and subassembly blueprints are used to indicate how various parts are assembled into a unit.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic welding symbols and identify the joints they correspond to.
  • Describe back, backing, and surfacing welds, and how they are indicated on blueprints.
  • Identify and interpret the use of inspection and testing methods on blueprints.
  • Provide a general understanding of the American Welding Society D1.1 standard, sections 1-5.
  • Produce a welding procedure using the D1.1 standard.
  • Interpret welding procedure results.
  • Exhibit ethical/professional behavior in attendacne, class conduct, assignment completion, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
