THE 101 - Theater/Drama Appreciation

How to enjoy theater ‐‐ both playgoing and the reading of plays. An appreciation of the various theater artists: actors, directors, designers, technicians. This is an appreciation course, not a performance course where students are expected to perform.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Read a play script and react critically to it by writing and speaking about it (determining its genre, themes, main action, plot, salient character and language aspects, as well as its structure)
  • See a production of a play and react critically to it by writing and speaking about its salient features in all production elements
  • Trace the general course of theater history from the ancient Greeks to the present day
  • Describe the tools, obligations and requirements of various theater artists (i.e. Directors, Actors, Designers, Technicians, Producers/Theater Managers and Critics)
