POL 151 - American National Government Offered FL, WI Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs A survey of the government of the United States. A range of institutions and topics will be examined, including the development of the Constitution; functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches; civil rights and civil liberties; and elections. Non‐governmental influences upon governmental behavior also will be explored, such as political parties, media, and interest group activities.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Determine the factors which led to the adoption of the United States Constitution and analyze the ways it has evolved over time.
- Describe and evaluate the system of separation of powers and checks & balances.
- Identify key issues involved with civil rights and civil liberties and evaluate their impact on the American political system.
- Determine and assess the impact of the media, interest groups, and public opinion on the political process.
- Identify and analyze the major issues which divide the Democratic & Republican parties.
- Describe and evaluate the primary functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
- Write persuasively and professionally while supporting their arguments with relevant evidence.
