MUS 101 - Basic Music Theory I

Basic components of music notation, rhythm, melody, harmony intervals and chords, major and minor tonalities. Emphasis on developing proficiency in reading music.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Through piano performance, demonstrate music theory applications such as note recognition, octave identification, chords, and scales.
Through ear training, identify chord quality, chord structure, and specific intervals.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic elements of music such as pulse, meter, enharmonics, notation, scales, key, pitch, intervals, triads, modes, and single line melodies.
Analyze basic harmony within a musical passage by identifying chord structures, figured bass, and general notation.
Critique the aesthetic merits of a live musical performance.
Exhibit ethical/professional behavior in attendance, class conduct, assignment completion, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
