MUS 101 - Basic Music Theory I Offered FL Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Basic components of music notation, rhythm, melody, harmony intervals and chords, major and minor tonalities. Emphasis on developing proficiency in reading music.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Through piano performance, demonstrate music theory applications such as note recognition, octave identification, chords, and scales.
- Through ear training, identify chord quality, chord structure, and specific intervals.
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic elements of music such as pulse, meter, enharmonics, notation, scales, key, pitch, intervals, triads, modes, and single line melodies.
- Analyze basic harmony within a musical passage by identifying chord structures, figured bass, and general notation.
- Critique the aesthetic merits of a live musical performance.
- Exhibit ethical/professional behavior in attendance, class conduct, assignment completion, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
