TMA 113 - Technical Math I

Applied mathematics for the technical-vocational student. Preparation in fractions, decimals, percentage, ratios, and measurement; use of electronic calculator, fundamentals of algebra applied to solution of trade‐related formulas (Calculator required.)

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Whole numbers
    Add, subtract, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers; as while as solving word and/or story problems.
  • Fractions
    Work with mixed numbers, improper fractions, reducing to lowest terms and solving word and/or story problems.
  • Decimal Numbers
    Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimal numbers, determine averages and solving word and/or story problems.
  • Percents
    Write fractions and decimal numbers as percents, convert percents to decimal numbers, solve word problems involving discounts, taxes, interest, commissions, efficiency and percent of tolerance and solve problems involving ratio and proportion.
  • Measurement
    Do arithmetic with measurement numbers, convert from one measurement unit to another, work with metric units and use of the common technical measuring instruments.
  • Pre-Algebra
    Solve problems that contain exponents, solve word problems that contain a squared variable, find square roots and solve word problems using square roots, and work with negative numbers.
  • Basic Algebra
    Be able to perform basic algebraic operations, evaluate formulas and literal expressions, translate simple English phrases and sentences into algebraic expressions and equations and solve linear equations with one unknown.
