Survey of American prose and poetry through 1865. Development of national literary themes.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Describe the salient characteristics of significant American literary genres, works, and authors from pre-historic times to 1865.
Explain how environment, politics, culture, religion, or gender influenced the character of American literature to 1865.
Analyze works of American literature to 1865 for their significant themes, values, and cultural milieu.
Write clearly and with appropriate literary terminology about their creative and interpretive relationship to various works of American literature to 1865.
Exhibit ethical & professional behavior in attendance, conduct, assignment completion, collaboration, work with source material, and constructive peer feedback.
