HIS 145 - US History to 1877

A survey of American history from the time of first European contact to the Civil War and Reconstruction. Social, political, economic, and religious factors are considered as they pertain to European interaction with Native Americans, colonization, the development of slavery, American Revolution, Early Republic, Westward expansion, spread of American democracy, and the causes and effects of Civil War.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Compare and contrast the characteristics of different groups of Native Americans before and after contact with Europeans.
  • Interpret the actions of key individuals, from the colonial era to Reconstruction, and appraise their impact on the nation’s history.
  • Compare and contrast the early histories of several colonies.
  • Explain the development of slavery beginning in the colonial era and extending to the years preceding the Civil War.
  • Identify the key events and eras which took place in this time period of American history and analyze their impact over time.
  • Explain the changes which took place in American society (i.e.: family life, gender roles, etc.) from the colonial era to Reconstruction.
  • Write persuasively and professionally while supporting their arguments with relevant evidence.
