EDU 222 - Children’s Literature Offered every other year Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Introduction to the significance of children’s literature both in education and in literary and cultural contexts. Considers a range of children’s and young adult books from multiple genres using a variety of aesthetic, sociocultural, pedagogical, and psychological perspectives. Features discussion of and writing about the work children’s literature performs in schools, communities, families, and personal experiences.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Practice, and reflect on, personal reading habits important for both personal learning and for modeling successful literacy for young readers.
- Define the importance of books and literacy in the lives of children, especially in the development of language, cognitive, personality, and social developmental skills.
- Recognize and assess aesthetic elements of both texts and illustrations in multiple genres in order to define quality children’s literature.
- Describe how traditional and contemporary literature reflects the values of a particular culture.
- Differentiate between different types of children’s genres and strategize ways to successfully incorporate these different genres into the classroom and other children’s environments.
- Demonstrate the selection and sharing of appropriate children’s literature from multiple genres and for various age groups and populations.
- Construct effective plans for the use of quality children’s literature, especially as a means of teaching/learning about diverse cultures and in light of potential controversies.
- Exhibit, both in the classroom and in the field, an awareness of the ethical and professional responsibilities incumbent on educators.
