ECE 120 - Early Childhood Ed and Child Care I Offered FL Lecture- 4 Lab- 6 7 credit hrs/10 contact hrs Investigation and study of principles and concepts of child development and childcare in the first five years of life. The Child Development Association (CDA) Competency Standards will be covered through demonstration of skills within the first six functional areas.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Articulate a professional philosophy statement.
- Complete 80 hours of teaching practicum in a three-star (or higher) rated quality ECE program.
- Implement developmentally appropriate practice in compliance with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)’s Code of Ethical Conduct, during the student teaching practicum.
- Identify an inclusive and culturally consistent environment incorporating appropriate teacher-to-child ratios and the regulations of quality childcare.
- Arrange appropriate and consistent indoor and outdoor environments to encourage play and exploration.
- Evaluate through anecdotal assessments the developmental needs and behavior of young children.
- Practice appropriate techniques for guiding young children.
- Modify the environment, routine, or activities to meet a child’s need based on feedback from faculty observation of student during the teaching practicum.
- Communicate an understanding and application of the law regarding abuse and neglect of young children.
- Design written competency statements I & II according to CDA standards.
- Develop a written collection of early childhood resources (RCI-1, RCI-2, and RCI-3) according to CDA standards.
- Develop a portfolio to include competencies and community resources for children and families.
