COR 218 - Legal Issues in Corrections

Prerequisite: appropriate reading placement
The course will examine constitutional law; law and court process; U.S. courts, prisoner rights; Section 42, 1983 concerns; and current topics.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Define state and federal constitutional laws as they relate to search and seizure, warrants, and arrest procedures.
  • Trace the path of a criminal case, including the purpose and structure of each hearing.
  • Describe the US and Michigan court systems, and the functions of each level of court.
  • Verbalize the landmark court cases involving corrections.
  • Describe the rights of a convicted offender, and the remedies for violating those rights.
