CHM 223 - Organic Chemistry II Offered WI Lecture- 3 Lab- 3 4 credit hrs/6 contact hrs Prerequisite: CHM 222 - Organic Chemistry I with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale) Continuation of CHM 222 . Common classes of organic compounds, including their nomenclature, structure, bonding, reactivity, mechanisms, synthesis and spectroscopic characterization.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify organic functional groups and predict their nomenclature, chemical properties and reactivity.
- Analyze spectroscopic data including IR(Infrared), MS (Mass Spectrometry) and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance)in order to elucidate the correct structure of a molecule.
- Illustrate mechanisms of organic compounds including substitution, addition, elimination, oxidation-reduction, combustion, free radical, aromatic and pericyclic reactions.
- Predict the product(s) of an organic reaction(s) consisting of one+ steps including stereo, regio- and chemo-selectivity.
- Formulate a reasonable multi-step synthesis of organic compounds.
- Safely perform in the laboratory procedures on chemical identity, chemical reactions, and isolating and purifying products.
- Use chemical literature to write a proper laboratory report following established principles of scientific data.
