BOT 137 - Local Flora

4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs
Students explore the flora of Michigan through field trips and understand how the ecosystem shapes local biodiversity. The course will familiarize students with the diversity of local plants, plant morphology, ecosystems, and the economic and historical value of local flora.  Laboratories will train students to be observational scientists, and center around class hiking trips to field sites.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Identify many local plants, including trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and non-seedbearing plants. Produce botanical sketches, botanical presses, and other means of studying plants of various taxa. Explain how the environment shapes local flora.
