BIO 114 - Fundamentals of Ecology Offered as needed Lecture- 3 Lab- 2 4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs Study of basic ecological principles including ecosystems, cycle, energy, populations, and communities. Field work will include the study of sand dunes, marshes, and forest areas. Importance of ecology and wise use of Michigan’s natural resources will be stressed. Student Learning Outcomes: Be able to explain the definition of ecology.
Be able to describe the abiotic portions of the ecosphere.
Understand the biotic portions of the ecosphere and their interactions between themselves and with the abiotic portions.
Be able to identify common plants and animals within the ecosystem being studied.
Be able to describe the general life cycles of organisms.
Understand different types of ecosystems, such as: terrestrial forests, coniferous forests, fields, bogs, ponds, lakes, sand dunes, and rivers.
Be able to discuss mans effect on the environment, ways that man can preserve the environment and ways that man can repair the destruction already done to the environment.
