ART 161 - Studio Art: Pottery I Offered FL, WI Clinical/Studio- 6 3 credit hrs/6 contact hrs Basic course in pottery with emphasis on hand building techniques: introduction to pottery wheel, Discussion of form and aesthetics. Introduction to glazes and surface decoration.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Acquire knowledge of the unique properties of clay through the acquisition of basic skills in hand-building.
- Be introduced to wheel-throwing as a formative process.
- Gain a basic knowledge of clay, glazes and the firing process.
- Gain knowledge of the ceramic traditions of Western and non-Western cultures.
- Obtain an awareness of contemporary ceramics.
- Gain an awareness of design elements and principles and learn to apply that knowledge in a creative, individual way.
- Develop their abilities to creatively express ideas and feelings in a plastic medium.
- Expand their linear and non-linear thinking capabilities in order to enhance their creative expression.
- Gain confidence in their ability to express themselves in a creative, non-verbal way.
- Become knowledgeable of ceramic vocabulary and processes.
- Increase their ability to think critically, problem solve and communicate their ideas verbally through group critiques.
- Enhance their communication skills through interaction in group projects.
