Prerequisite: ECE 132 - Promote Erly Lit and Language Dv  with “C” or better (2.0 out of a 4.0 scale)
This course offers a comprehensive, concentrated examination of developing literacy concepts in grades PK-3 including print concepts and decoding, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, morphology, spelling, syntax, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, composition, and speaking and listening. Students will consider how research can effectively inform classroom practice as well as the importance of teaching in a culturally responsive manner. A field component (30+ hours) will enable students to describe an individual’s current literacy development and determine appropriate literacy goals and corresponding assessments. Classroom discussion, reflective writing, academic reading, and participatory fieldwork are equally important methods through which students in this course will develop professional knowledge and expertise in the field. 4 credits (including one lab credit for field work/observation)
