Electrical-Electronics Certificate


This Electrical-Electronics Certificate program of study has two paths. Please note the requirements of each path below.

ELECTRICAL JOURNEYMAN LICENSURE PATH: This Electrical-Electronics program of study meets the State of Michigan core classes total hours requirement for the Electrical Journeyman Apprentice Program. Students in the Apprenticeship Program must be employed and work under the direct instruction of a licensed electrical contractor, and must register with the State of Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes within 30 days of beginning the apprenticeship employment. Other requirements to become an Electrical Journeyman include:

  • A total of 576 hours of core classes are require by the Electrical Apprenticeship Bureau and the Department of Labor.
  • Students are allowed to apply up to 1000 hours of Related Technical Training that is required to sit for the Electrical Journeyman’s Licensing Exam.
  • Have not less than 8000 hours of practical experience obtained over a period of not less than four (4) years related to electrical construction or maintenance of buildings or electrical wiring or equipment under the direct supervision of a person licensed under 2016 PA 407 (Maximum credit of 2000 hours per year).
  • To hold an Electrical Journeyman License an individual must be 20 years of age.
  • Must take and pass the examination.
  • If an applicant fails to pass the electrical journeyman examination twice within a period of two years, the applicant is ineligible to sit for another examination until a period of at least one year after the date of failure of the second examination. After that one-year period, he or she is again eligible to sit for an electrical journeyman’s license if he or she presents to the board proof of the successful completion of a course on Michigan electrical code, electrical fundamentals, or electrical theory approved by the board.

NOTE: A veteran providing satisfactory proof of separation from the armed forces of the United States under “honorable” or “general under honorable conditions” is exempt from the initial license fee for the application for Electrical Apprentice. For consideration, please attach a copy of either a DD-214 and/or DD-215 to your application. NON-LICENSURE PATH: A student’s chosen career path may not require electrical licensure; however, the knowledge and skills learned within this certificate program of study will be beneficial in a variety of other career fields within the skilled trades.

Students must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher in order to earn a degree or certificate.
