CVT 130 - Clinical Practicum I

Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Cardiovascular Technology Program 
This course provides an overview of the foundations of invasive cardiovascular science and the practitioner’s role relative to the hospital health care delivery system.  The student will observe clinical practices in the cardiac catheterization lab and how the cardiac catheterization lab interacts with non-invasive cardiology, echocardiography, the emergency department, the preprocedural/recovery unit, and cardiac medical/surgical floors within the hosptial.  The student will also learn basic scrub and procedural techniques.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Maintain adherence to the rules and safety regulations of departments and the hospital at all times.
  • Maintain adherence to HIPAA (Health Insurance and Accountability Act) regulations.
  • Examine the practitioners’ duties in history taking, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, administering medications, entering information in the health record, and in coding.
  • Duplicate practitioners methods of professional interaction and communication with patients.
  • Demonstrate methods of professional interaction and communication with healthcare team members.
  • Categorize scrubbing, circulating, and control room duties in the invasive cardiovascular laboratory.
