PSY 161 - Introduction to Psychology

This course explores human behavior, particularly its causes, covering topics such as the brain and nervous system, behavioral genetics, sensory processes, consciousness, learning, memory, cognition, lifespan development, personality, emotion, motivation, stress, mental health issues, and psychotherapy. The course and activities also focus on conducting scientific work in psychology, critical thinking skills, research examples, and the application of psychological knowledge. 

Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe psychology as a scientific discipline, including how the scientific method is used within psychological research to define, predict, and shape human behavior.  
  • Differentiate between various sub-disciplines within psychology (e.g., health psychology, cognition) and understand their main findings. 
  • Describe core psychological principles from the major sub-disciplines.
  • Discuss human behavior in a professional and academic manner using accurate terminology.
  • Apply psychological concepts to real life examples.
  • Apply scientific reasoning skills and critical thinking skills to claims and questions about human behavior.
