PHL 102 - Introduction to Ethics Offered WI even years Lecture- 3 3 credit hrs/3 contact hrs Introduction to the study of classical moral theories and their application to contemporary ethical issues such as war, capital punishment, animal rights, and sexual morality.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Explain the major ideas of traditional moral theories such as those of Egoism, Utilitarianism, Deontology, Natural Law Theory, and Virtue Ethics.
- Define the major themes addressed by traditional moral theories, such as intrinsic value, selfishness, duty, consequences, intentions, character, etc.
- Delineate the major issues involved in the study of contemporary moral problems such as animal rights, environmental ethics, capital punishment, etc.
- Critically assess moral issues, problems and theories.
- Summarize and analyze the major views of ethicists such as Kant, Mill, Aristotle, Singer, etc.
- Apply ideas and theories from the study of ethics to current world events and real-life situations involving family, work, personal relationships, etc.
- Create theories that express individual beliefs about ethics and which draw from and reflect upon course content.
- Exhibit ethical/professional behavior in and out of the classroom in attendance, conduct, assignment completion, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
