OIS 120 - Electronic Medical Records Offered WI Lecture- 3 Lab- 2 4 credit hrs/5 contact hrs Focus on the function of an electronic medical/electronic health record (EMR/EHR) in ambulatory health care delivery with emphasis on the use of an EMR/EHR to enhance quality and safety in patient care. Students will learn to use EMR/EHR software, access a patient account, document per CMS requirements, and understand Clinical Quality Measures and Pay for Performance Concepts.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Communicate relevant information concisely and accurately using feedback techniques.
- Exhibit ethical/professional behavior in attendance, class conduct, assignment completion, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
- Identify different types of appointment scheduling methods.
- Identify advantages and disadvantages of manual and electronic appointment systems.
- Outline and describe processes (precertification and preauthorization) for managed care requirements for patient referral.
- Coach patients appropriately.
- Manage appointment schedule using established priorities.
- Schedule a patient procedure.
- Create, organize, and file a patient’s medical record using an EMR.
- Identify and enter types of patient information data utilizing a practice management system.
- Identify and perform routine maintenance of administrative or clinical equipment.
- List steps and perform an inventory with documentation.
- Define legal terms used in the health care industry.
- Identify critical information required for scheduling patient procedures and their financial obligations for services rendered.
- Define bookkeeping terms associated with basic practice finances.
- Describe banking procedures as related to the ambulatory care setting.
- Identify precautions for accepting various types of payments and making adjustments to patient accounts.
