OIS 105 - Medical Office Coding & Ins Billing Offered WI Lecture- 2 Lab- 2 3 credit hrs/4 contact hrs Prerequisite/Corequisite: ALH 104 - Medical Terminology and ANP 118 - Introduction to the Human Body Prepares students in coding and billing skills necessary in a doctor’s office and other medical office facilities. Includes ICD Coding, CPT Coding, Medicare Fraud and Abuse, and Evaluation Management.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Communicate medical coding and billing concepts, methods, and evidence clearly in written and spoken reports.
- Exhibit ethical/professional behavior in attendance, class conduct, assignment completion, teamwork and constructive peer feedback.
- Demonstrate proficiency of provider reimburesement, compliance, and HIPPA as it relates to the healthcare setting and procedural/diagnostic medical coding.
- Explore the body system within the ICD-10 code sets.
- Utilize tactful communication skills with medical providers to ensure accurate code selection.
- Discuss the effects of upcoding/downcoding.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of correct coding in an office visit setting for evaluation and management.
- Utilize Medicare guidelines to identify, prevent, and report fraud and abuse.
- Describe various types of insurance.
