Study and application of the concepts of mental health care. Emphasis is on maintaining optimal mental wellness, associated treatment, through safe administration of medications and/or therapies, and recognizing the holistic nature of humans. Gain understanding of own behavior, establish and maintain a therapeutic environment, improve interviewing techniques.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Provide written documentation of holistic nursing care to individuals and families throughout the continuum with acute/chronic changes in mental health status using evidence-based principles and the nursing process.
Understand the role of the nurse as a patient-health advocate for diverse individuals and families with acute/chronic changes in mental health status.
Differentiate the pathophysiological and clinical manifestations of common acute/chronic mental health care disorders in individuals.
Demonstrate understanding of legal/ethical issues as they relate to the mental health professional nurse.
Synthesize classroom standards of patient care as it relates to QSEN, the Mental Health Code, the ANA Standards, and the individual with mental health issues.
