Transfer from West Shore Community College

West Shore Community College is the perfect place to begin your academic career. You can transfer a few courses, the approximately 30‐credit hour general education MTA (Michigan Transfer Agreement), or a two‐year degree. The work you complete here will put you well on your way to earning a bachelor’s degree.

If you think a college transfer is in your future, we encourage you to follow these important steps early in your academic career. It is your responsibility to fulfill all transfer and/or graduation requirements.

Transfer Checklist

Students who will be pursuing bachelor’s degrees after completing their studies at West Shore are advised to follow this simple checklist of steps in the transfer process:

  1. Meet regularly with a West Shore advisor.

  2. As early as possible, select the institution you wish to attend following WSCC. Thoroughly investigate both the entrance and degree requirements. Basic program guides and catalogs for most Michigan senior institutions are available in the Student Services Office or through links from WSCC’s website at http://www.westshore.edu/c_students/transfer/transfer_out.html.

  3. Confer with representatives from the college you want to transfer to when they visit WSCC. Times, dates, and places for these visits will be posted in the lounge of the Campus Center and are available in the Student Services Office.

  4. Apply for transfer admission well in advance of your anticipated transfer date. Ask about available financial aid as well as scholarships and set up an appointment to visit the campus where you want to transfer.

  5. Request an official copy of your West Shore transcript for the transfer institution by accessing the request for an official transcript through my.westshore.edu. Transcripts may not be distributed to students who have unpaid financial obligations to the College.

Michigan Transfer Agreement

The Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) includes at least 30 credit hours of general education courses. When these are completed, the courses are transferred as a block to all Michigan community colleges and to most colleges and universities, providing students earn a 2.0 GPA in each course. The terms of the MTA have been embedded in all AA and AS program. Students in an AAAS program who think they will complete a bachelor’s degree in the future should consult an advisor in Student Services to discuss these courses in their program of study, reducing the number of courses needed at the 4‐year institution. See MTA Gen Ed Courses  for WSCC courses that are part of the MTA.

The MTA replaces the MACRAO agreement; the MACRAO continues in place for student who attended prior to Fall 2014 so long as it is completed by Summer 2019. Students may also opt into MTA. See an advisor for details.

Cooperative Programs with Universities

Most West Shore students say that they like the fact the college is located close to home. A growing number of 4‐year institutions are working with West Shore so that students will be able to complete more than just their freshman and sophomore years in the area.

Ferris State University offers bachelor degrees on the West Shore campus in elementary education, business administration, and early childhood education. In addition, Davenport University offers online bachelor degrees in a variety of business areas. Both universities allow students to complete 3 years of classes at WSCC, before enrolling in their programs. It is highly recommended that students consult with a WSCC advisor to ensure a smooth transition into the bachelor program. Several other institutions also have cooperative programs with WSCC and the recommended courses for these programs may be obtained using the University Transfer Guide link, under Academics on West Shore’s web site.
